Let’s get prepared!
January 28, 2021Anyone else feel like we keep getting robbed of a snowy winter here in Pennsylvania? The last GOOD snow we got was 5 years ago – blizzard Jonas. Since it seems that we will not get a good ole winter blizzard this year, I am starting the countdown to Spring….
51 more days!
I don’t know about you guys, but the first sign of warm weather and I am ready to get outside and start doing all the things around my home. There is just something so relaxing about being outside in the fresh air, the sun on your face, the removal of all the dead stuff– I just love it!
But I have learned that you should wait, well at least to mow. In this blog, I am going to give you the straight facts about lawn mowing and when to start along with some other tips of the trade.
Even though you are in a hurry to get outside and make your home “presentable” again – you could seriously damage your lawn if you mow too early.
- It is important that you wait until there is absolutely 0 chance of frost and temps dropping below freezing.
- While you are waiting for temps to go up – take the time to walk your property and ensure that all sticks, debris, stones, etc is removed from the lawn so you are ready to go!
- Wait until your grass is, at a minimum, 2 inches tall before mowing. This allows for the development of strong and healthy roots.
- Never take off more than 1/3” of the grass’s length.
- First mow should be bagged. For the remainder of the season, you can get away with leaving the grass clippings on the lawn as a natural fertilizer.
A few more tips before starting up that mower:
- Sharpen or replace any dull blades
- Ensure that your blades are balanced
- A fresh tank of fuel
- Clean oil
