So You Want To Be a Landscaper?

The landscaping industry is growing so rapidly that one of the biggest issues is finding qualified workers to execute the company vision and services. If you are thinking about a career in this booming business, here are some qualities that make an excellent landscaper!

Attention to Detail

Landscaping is more than just mowing and planting. Some property owners have a vision and have paid you to execute it as perfectly as possible. If you can notice when the spacing between flowerbeds is uneven or when the budget for materials seems off, you’re on the right track.

Seeing the Big Picture

This seems to contradict the previous statement, but in fact, it goes hand in hand. You have to know what the final product is going to look like in order to know when the details are going correctly or not. Catching ‘small’ problems (the wrong type of mulch being delivered, for example) before they become big messes is key to keeping on schedule and on budget.

Problem Solving

Let’s continue with the scenario above where a truckload of the wrong type of mulch is being delivered to a job site. What do you do now? Do you send it away knowing the projects will be delayed, ask the property owner if they are okay with that change, or contact the home office? All or none could be correct depending on a variety of factors. You have to know how to make the best call. Or better yet, know when the call is even yours to make.

Creativity

If you desire to be a project manager, a good dose of creativity is essential. Having a vision is how all projects start out. Creativity is also a factor when it comes to finding solutions for unforeseen bumps in the road.

Teamwork

This one should be obvious. Unless you have your own business that is decidedly a one-man show, you will inevitably be working on a team. Doing things on your own or thinking everything should be done your way is not going to get you very far. While you definitely have more say if you are the owner or foreman and it’s part of your job description to make decisions, you will still run into mountains of problems with a ‘my way or the highway’ attitude.

Desire to Learn

This is the difference between someone who just wants a temporary job or a career. You can always make do and stay in an entry-level position. If you want to grow in this industry and your company there is an abundance of classes and information out there take advantage of.

Love of the Outdoors

If you are the ‘indoorsy’, love office work, or can’t stand being too hot or too cold, then this may not be the job for you!
